Family Literacy

What if you met a sign on your doctor’s office door that looked like this when you had to see him for an important appointment?

Our toughest challenge is finding, then helping, adults who have literacy skills insufficient to function adequately in everyday living.

Picture your life if you could not:

  • Compare grocery prices
  • Read the labels on medication bottles
  • Read the provisions of the loan document you were signing
  • Open a bank account or fill out a deposit slip
  • Write permission slips for children or help with their homework

You would do everything you could to hide that problem, and only ask for help when you absolutely had to do so. Consequently, this is a “hidden” population and difficult to help. Many are very skilled in learning to compensate but will never realize their potential as fully engaged parents or citizens.

Forming a special case are adults motivated to get their high school equivalency but cannot read well enough to enter the GED Program.

We need tutors. One-on-one instruction is always helpful to motivation and success.

We need
to find and encourage those in our community who will improve their lives, and the lives of their families, by learning to read.

The Coalition has established an Adult Learning Center that is quiet, comfortable, and equipped with computer assisted learning programs.
How you can help.

Today’s economic situation has left many jobless. Their opportunity to find work is severely restricted without the ability to read or do basic math at a level sufficient to function at the survival level.
